The appointment of New Zealand’s most successful Olympian to head up the nation’s first white water park is the icing on the cake for an attraction set to draw people worldwide.
Ian Ferguson is the general manager of Wero White Water Park (www.wero.org.nz) due to open at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau, Auckland in April 2016.
The former sprint kayaker, who cleaned up in international K1, K2 and K4 kayak events in the 1980s, is also extremely comfortable in white water and has competed in world championships.
“We are fine tuning Wero to eliminate risk and ensure the course delivers what we need in various situations,” says Ferguson.
The park (which also includes the world’s first manmade 4.5 metre waterfall) will be open to the MICE market, making logistics a breeze. ‘Imagine finishing your meeting then walking outside to jump on some rafts for unsurpassed teambuilding, then finishing up with a meal or BBQ… all on the one site!” says Karyn Spencer, Sales Manager.
Attached to the main event centre, the park will be complemented by an additional 1260m2 of flexible conference space, which opens in January 2016. Each interchangeable room features floor to ceiling natural daylight, full black out drapes and indoor/outdoor flow.
