Claudelands’ innovative Graduate Programme nurtures young talent

Developing fresh talent and helping young people establish a career in the MICE industry are two key drivers behind Claudelands Conference and Exhibition Centre’s newly launched Graduate Development Programme.

A first in the New Zealand market, the 18-month programme is designed to nurture and develop emerging event sector professionals.
While the programme’s particular focus is Claudelands and the MICE sector, graduates are exposed to all aspects of Hamilton City Council’s Event Facilities  business, including sales and marketing, client services, venue operations and other supporting functions.

Applications were invited for the first intake earlier this year, with strong interest received and two successful graduates, Edward Bryant and Karina Hallberg, appointed. The pair has just completed a six-week induction and will now rotate across different business units and city venues, gaining on-the-job experience before transitioning to a specialist area. They will receive professional guidance and encouragement through the support of line managers and the oversight of a development manager.

The programme also includes completing an entertainment and event venues core skills certificate offered by Events Venues Association of New Zealand in partnership with Skills Active ITO.

The programme’s architect, recruitment specialist Justine Winter says “Our Graduate Development Programme is an exciting initiative for aspiring MICE professionals.

“Not only will graduates be exposed to a wide-range of interesting, meaningful job experiences within the venue wider business, but it also positions them to build a long-term career in the MICE sector in New Zealand and overseas.”

Hamilton City’s Event Facilities Director, Murray Jeffrey, says people and service are a core focus for Claudelands this year.

“The Graduate Development Programme is an important part of our business strategy and is one of a suite of evolutionary initiatives we are launching this year. Strong growth at Claudelands, and in our wider business, means we need access to more talented people and we believe this is a smart way to do that.

“At the same time, this will present motivated young people with an opportunity to develop a career with a market leading business.

“Our ultimate focus is to ensure we are delivering to the highest levels, enhancing Claudelands’ overall experience for both clients and delegates and helping us take the business to the next level,” added Jeffrey.
