Restored Napier War Memorial officially open

The Napier War Memorial now has its essential elements back in place after a significant rebuild next to the Napier War Memorial Centre. The place of tranquility is a wonderful addition to the centre with its historic floral clock, 1931 birdbath and seating under two large pohutukawa trees.

The roll of honour plaques and eternal flame have been returned. New features include a ‘living roll’ with the names of the fallen and a QR-enabled link so people can discover more information about each name through their mobile phones.

New Ballroom name honours original architect
To honour the original architect of the Napier War Memorial Centre, the ballroom has been officially named Natusch Ballroom.

Guy Natusch was born and raised in Hawke’s Bay and had a life-long passion for Napier and its built environment. A third-generation architect, he worked in the family firm established in 1886. He was the architect of the original War Memorial Hall, opened in 1957 and many of the elements in the restored memorial reflect his designs.
